Thing 23

Feedback:
We're particularly interested in:
How could you draw on what you have learned in 23 Things to help you in your work?
A general awareness of all this new information is very useful

How could the library use the technologies featured in 23 Things to improve its service?
By employing chat, having podcasts and instructional videos on the Library website instead of being so text-focussed

How do you think the 23 Things program could be improved in the future?
I think it is good as it is

Do you think you'll keep blogging or keep using any of the other tools you learned about?

Not blogging but I will be using the news update service

Thing 22

I had the good fortune to attend the Library Staff Presentation by Jane Miller demonstrating Skype and if I had broadband at home I would use it myself, however with dial-in I dont think its worth even trying.

I have used chat on gmail. I find that chat is really useful with overseas contacts, very cheap and useful for quick gathering of information when you can fire off questions and answers. I would have used google talk but after several attempts at finding a username gave up - sorry.

I would think that library users would think this a great tool to get questions answered quickly.

Thing 21

I listened to some podcasts. I also added a subscription to BBC Radio 4 Friday night comedy, to my blog, by adding a gadget

Thing 20 and a funny video clip

Browsing YouTube could take all day, and it would be very enjoyable too.

Here is a funny video clip called Karma ...

Thing 19

I added a photo to the VU Wikibrary. As I am pet unencumbered I put a photo I took in Queensland of tiny frogs on a ginger plant, you have to look very carefully to see them.

Wikis are very popular and are useful. I like the VU Wikibrary and it's good to share photos. There are so many new jargon words in this 23 things training.

Thing 18

I looked through and listened to the resources available in Thing 18. It is good to be able to gather information in so many different ways.
I like the objectives with Library 2 to encourage feedback from clients in libraries rather than just giving information out in a one-sided way.

Thing 17

I played with delicious, I asked it a question "whats for dinner" and I received a week of menus for next week. The menu was interesting as it was sponsored by Knorr sauces, so every day the meal was plastered in some sort of blanket of whitish sauce - very amusing.

Thing 16

I now have my own customised iGoogle home page. Carefully following instructions I have added the prescribed gadgets and added one of my own choosing, an animated frog.

I like iGoogle, but not sure whether I will use it much, it is another time-taker.

Thing 15

I used Google Book Search to find The Missing Manual. This and similar research tools are easy to use.

Thing 14

I logged in toGoogle docs. This could be very useful, especially if you don't already have similar software on your own pc. I can see lots of uses for this at home and in the community, but for work as we have the necessary software and Y drive and doc store it is probably not required. I do like the idea of not having to send emails with attachments any more.

Thing 13

Google maps is a useful online tool. If you are looking to buy a house or go on holiday you can see a real view of what the area looks like, rather than an enhanced image shown for marketing purposes.

I checked out my house and the view is fairly old.

Thing 12

I looked at Myspace, searching for "Library" with varied results. I have an account on Facebook. Social networking sites are very popular and can be time black holes. Facebook enables you to easily keep in touch with folk from all over the world. On the other hand these types of networking sites have been blamed for serious fraud so be very careful.

Task 11 - subscribe to a blog

I subscribed to Cameron Library Renovation News in Canada, they are undertaking a major renovation http://blogs.library.ualberta.ca/camreno/ They show pictures so it is very interesting. Footscray Park Library may look like this soon.

Thing 9 - Feed Reader

I set up an account with Google Reader.

I added a news subscription, look forward to finding the orange icons on websites.

Can't really see any use for this in my job, but this may be revealed.
